âWhoa, what just happened here?â Max asks.
I stare at the doorway where Mason just disappeared. âIâm not exactly sure.â
âI think your little drummer boy was jealous.â
âOf what?â I ask.
âMe. Iâm a big, strapping lad, and maybe he didnât know I was your brother.â
I roll my eyes. âYou are ridiculous. Besides, Iâm sure in one of our conversations I told him yours and Shelbyâs names. Thereâs no way he didnât know we were related.â I shake my head trying not to cry. âNo, he tried to beg off from hugging me, telling me how sweaty he was, but I hugged him anyways. I forced myself on him.â I nearly choke on my words.
Do you know what my stupid asshole of a brother does? He laughs. âYouâre ridiculous, Luna. That is not what happened. Mark my words. Everything will be different when you see him again at the Dallas concert.â
âOh shit! The Dallas concert. I promised the girls Iâd go to one more with them, so I wasnât a complete party pooper. I canât see him again, Max. Itâll be too embarrassing.â
He shakes his head, his mop of curls, dark like my own hair. âNope. My big sister does not get embarrassed. She eats embarrassment for breakfast, then spits it out on adolescent children.â
âWhat?â
âI dunno. I was trying to be inspirational but itâs clearly not my strong suit.â
âYeah, you should probably stick to hockey.â
âMy point was youâre the bravest person I know. If this thing between yâall doesnât turn out to be what you want it to be, youâll survive that. But I truly believe this was a big misunderstanding.â
âThank you for saying all of that.â Right now, I do not feel particularly brave. Instead, I know that if I were alone right now, Iâd already be crying. So I suppose itâs a good thing Iâm here with my brother.
Iâd had to come clean with Max about my online friendship with Mason since he was tagging along to the concert. He hadnât even teased me that much. Of course, heâd been enjoying the town car Mason had sent for us and all the subsequent VIP treatment.
The girlsâprimarily Shelby and Irelandâdrag us the rest of the way backstage and we get to meet the rest of the band. Which is surreal and cool. Theyâre all so down to earth and normal. Dani is snuggled up in Jaxâs lap, and it makes me want to squeal for my friend.
Iâm pretty sure Shelby is sporting a baby bump, but I havenât heard any official news, and I donât want to make assumptions. I had a lady at HEB do that to me one time. She asked me when the baby was due, and I told her it was just a food baby, and as far as I knew, those didnât have due dates.
âYo, whereâs Mason?â Jax asks.
âHeadache,â Crue interjects, glancing at me. âYou know how he gets sometimes.â He pulls Ireland down next to him on the sofa and puts her hand in his lap.
